Discover® Student Card Review

April 29th, 2009

The Discover® Student Card is a good option for students looking to get their first credit card. Unlike most student credit cards, the Discover® Student Card has a rewards program. Here’s how their rebate program works. Your first $1,500 in spending earn you .25% cash back, your second $1,500 earn you 0.5% cash back, and everything after that gets you 1% cash back. There is a $500 cap on cash back per year, but if you’re a student you’re probably not going to reach that mark.

discoverYou can also get 5% cash back from certain retail stores that Discover has partnered with. The list includes Bed Bath and Beyond, Staples, Lowes, and a bunch of others.

With all Discover Cards you can either get cash back or get double the cash value when you select a gift card from one of their partners. They have a very long list of retailers so this seems like the best option for your rewards points. You can review their list to see if there’s a retailer you’d want to get a gift card from.

There’s no annual fee with the Discover® Student Card, which is a nice break for college students who have enough to worry about with their high tuition bills and low incomes. The card is also available in several different designs, which can be appealing to college students that need to save up for their college savings plans.

As far as rewards cards go, the rewards on this card aren’t amazing, but for a student credit card you won’t be able to find a card with more rewards. Student cards typically don’t offer as many features as regular cards because students typically don’t have much of a credit history. If you can get a student card that has any sort of rewards, then you are getting a very good card for your first credit card.
